Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church
The Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, the first African Episcopal church in America, was also a secret home for escaped slaved during the pre-emancipation days on the United States. the site is now maintained by Brown University.

First Baptist Church
This church, founded by Roger Williams in 1638, was the first of its kind in the United States. Built in order for Williams and his followers to have a place of worship, the church has survived wars, rebellion and recession. While many of its contemporaries have closed their doors, the First Baptist Church in America remains vital and strong.
